Perimenopause
Menopause
The Second Spring
Menopause marks a significant transition in the life of women, signalling an end to fertility and accompanying hormonal shifts that produce monthly periods. Generally occurring between 45 and 55 years old, Menopause is confirmed after 12 months without menstrual cycles, as hormones like oestrogen and progesterone drop due to the cessation of egg production by the ovaries. These changes can be accompanied by certain physical manifestations, too.
As women approach their 40s, they may find themselves entering Perimenopause - a transitionary period that can last anywhere from several months to several years. The typical duration is around four years, and while this time of change carries various fluctuations in hormones, fertility remains intact until closer to menopausal onset. As oestrogen levels continue to decrease during the final one or two-year stretch before full menopause status, many experience physical symptoms as well.
From a TCM perspective, Perimenopause and Menopause are called "The Second Spring".
Menopause affects the physical and mental health of around 8 in 10 women, with common symptoms such as mood changes, hot flushes (also called flashes), night sweats, disrupted sleep and a reduced sex drive. The impact can often be vastly underestimated, and whilst there is now much more awareness around help and support available, it is essential to be aware that there are many ways to manage these symptoms so you don't feel overwhelmed or helpless during this stage of life!
